Spanish Freak Masterpieces | People in Places

Film People in Places is a production “with zero budget” based on collaborations of actors, improvisations and camera in hand recording. Director, screenwriter and playwright, Cavestany belongs to the movement that critics have described as post humor, in which laughter is not the main objective, at least not in the conventional way, but through the bewilderment or discomfort of the viewer. He mixes a more rude Spanish humor with the metaphysical satire in Jose Luis Cuerda or the Monty Pythons style.

Cavestany had already stood out within this movement, with television sketches for Muchachada Nui, the short film Querido Antonio, the comic book Molg H, and films like Dispongo de barcos (2010) or El señor (2012). He is working in that same direction in his latest film, That sensation (2016).

Cavestany’s works are born from the absurd, and try to confront the spectator with its own contradictions. He directs always from an intelligent approach, leaning towards an outstanding but also freak art work.

Lo más parecido a grabar con presupuesto cero, a base de colaboraciones de actores, improvisaciones instantáneas y cámara en mano. Director, guionista y dramaturgo, Cavestany pertenece al movimiento que la crítica ha calificado como posthumor, en el que la risa no es el objetivo principal, al menos no de la manera convencional, sino a través del desconcierto o la incomodidad del espectador, y que mezcla las convenciones del humor popular español más grosero con las de la sátira metafísica de Jose Luis Cuerda o los Monty Python en su versión más posmoderna, por intentar acotar lo que no puede definirse.

Cavestany ya había despuntado en esta corriente, a la que podrían pertenecer desde los sketches televisivos de Muchachada Nui a los cortometrajes de Querido Antonio pasando por los cómic de Molg H, con películas como Dispongo de barcos (2010) o El señor (2012) y continua en esta misma línea con sus últimos trabajos igualmente recomendables, como Esa sensación (2016).

Las de Cavestany son obras que nacen de la lógica del absurdo, que confrontan al espectador con sus propias contradicciones, rodadas con urgencia y dejadez, siempre desde el planteamiento inteligente, entre lo brillante y lo freak.
