Ignacio Tejedor | December Guest Curator

Ignacio Tejedor at "The Communist Party" 2011-present. Posters, garlands, music. by Maya Saravia

Ignacio Tejedor (Madrid, 1986), PhD in Fine Arts from the Complutense University, is dedicated to the investigation of contemporary artistic processes that he formalizes through the construction of situations that transition from academic to artistic environments.

Ignacio has researched in cities such as Belgrade, Milan, London or New York, among others, to study the operations of the international art circuit and the artists who participate in it. Currently he combines both his research activity and his artistic practices with the coordination of Espositivo, a platform designed to promote artistic creation and dissemination in Madrid.

He understands art as a device capable of questioning socio-cultural conventions, offering his receptors spaces of reflection that are alien to any pragmatic logic. These spaces of possibility that generate the art and allows stimulate the subjectivities of the spectators and foster their imaginative capacity to create new ways of being in the world.

Spain Fresh - How do you see the current Spanish cultural scene?

I wouldn't speak of a single cultural scene in the Spanish context. I think it would be more appropriate to speak of a plurality of languages, practices, themes and ways of doing that are increasingly linked to each other, giving heterogeneous results and loaded with nuances. Something that determines the Spanish cultural creation is the lack of resources from the public institutions, as well as the anecdotal ones from the private sphere; This has forced artists to explore new lands and strengthen the links of our community.

Spain Fresh - What kind of outsourcing initiatives of our culture do you find interesting?

AC / E, the residency program El Ranchito in Madrid or Hangar in Barcelona.

SF - Tell us about the creative landscape in your city.

Madrid, like any city with a high population density, brings together very different ways of thinking, which translates into an enrichment of creative processes. Also, as in many other cities, the cost of living in the center causes a centrifugal force that moves the most vulnerable groups (as is the case of artists) to the periphery. This combination benefits districts less familiar with the artistic offer.
